San Diego Ear, Nose & Throat Specialists Treats Sleep Apnea

As North County’s leading Otolaryngologists, San Diego Ear, Nose & Throat Specialists treats a wide range of conditions—including sleep apnea.  Otolaryngologists have specialized training involving diseases and medical conditions which reside on the face, head, and neck.  Before sleep apnea can be effectively treated, it must be diagnosed to ensure it is the exact source of the patient’s sleeping discomfort.

Diagnosing Sleep Apnea

Although frequently associated with the condition, snoring alone is not a true sign of sleep apnea.  Some people who snore may be able to reduce or completely rid snoring by adopting a more physical lifestyle, establishing a regular sleeping pattern, or elevating their head while sleeping.  Sleep apnea is more serious than light snoring because it causes symptoms which can include:

  • depression
  • dry mouth
  • dry throat
  • episodes of not breathing
  • excessively loud breathing
  • excessive daytime sleepiness
  • fatigue
  • headache
  • heavy snoring
  • insomnia
  • weight gain
  • irritability
  • mood swings
  • mouth breathing
  • nightmares
  • sleep deprivation
  • stroke
  • heart attack

To accurately diagnose sleep apnea San Diego Ear, Nose & Throat Specialists has the patient undergo a physical exam and sleep study.  During the sleep study, a polysomnogram (or PSG) is placed on the patient to record several factors, including:

  • brain activity
  • blood pressure
  • heart rate
  • eye movements
  • blood oxygen levels
  • position
  • airflow through the nose
  • snoring
  • chest movements

All of these variables are monitored and help to diagnose and formulate a customized treatment plan for the patient if sleep apnea is discovered.  All of the testing for sleep apnea is painless.  Sleep apnea can be a serious condition if untreated.  If you feel you are suffering from sleep apnea, please make an appointment with us at (760) 479-2100.
